The Colva football ground situated a few meters away from the Colva beach and which is in the custody of Directorate of Sports is craving for much needed attention.
Neglected by the authorities and with no sporting activity worth its name taking place at the sporting venue, it was left to some sports inclined migrant workers to take upon the task of cleaning the neglected ground and make it for cricket action.
“Yes, we are cleaning the ground of the excess grass and also levelling the ground to make it fit for cricket play,” said Ramu, who claimed he was a Goan, but others who were part of the group told that they are workers from Karnataka and other parts of India who have made Colva their home for many years.
The migrant workers said they have been hit by the Cricket World Cup bug and want to have their own Cricket World Cup in Colva.
“We love cricket and after watching after favorite stars on TV we decided that we will also have our own matches here in Colva,” added Chandra.
Asked if they have taken any permission from Directorate of Sports, they replied in the negative.
Infact a visit to the ground, reveals that the ground has not been maintained for years, with puddles of water having gathered on the playing service and wild creepers have surfaced all over the wire mess fencing.
The falling and utter neglects of the Directorate of Sports is more have left the two gates leading to the ground, for a free passage to all and sundry.
Infact football lovers from Colva informed that the ground served as parking place for the recently concluded National Games Beach Soccer tournament which was held on Colva beach.
