Goa's head coach Mateus Cupertino Costa has been working diligently with the probables for Goa's Santosh Trophy squad. Over the past few days, the players have undergone intense training, including practice matches against Sporting Clube de Goa, as Costa finalises his 22-player squad for the tournament.

"Representing Goa used to be an honor in itself," Costa reflected. However, players today understand that unless they finish as champions or runners-up, they won't be noticed. This has become their driving force, and they are determined to reach that level. “It's a collective mission, and I am here to help fuel that dream,” Costa said with unwavering determination.

Costa shared that he has a habit of observing performances in various tournaments like the ISL, I-League, and others, noting down the names of standout players. This practice has helped him finalize his squad for the Santosh Trophy. "This habit has proven helpful in settling down on my final squad for the Santosh Trophy," Costa told The Goan Everyday.

He is pleased with the progress his team has made during the camp, saying, "We have a very young and talented team. We’re looking forward to tough games ahead, but we’re confident we will qualify for the next phase." Costa also mentioned that although Goa's past squads included players from clubs like Dempo, Salgaocar SC, Sesa SC, Churchill Brothers FC, and MPT Sports Club, the current crop of players is equally motivated to carry on the legacy.

"Players like Mauricio Afonso, Nicolas Pereira, Mahesh Lotlikar, Hercules Gomes, and many others have been part of Goa’s Santosh Trophy teams and helped bring success. Now, it's up to this new generation to continue that tradition," he said.

Costa also added that he gathered valuable insights from coaches and individuals directly involved in Pro League teams, which helped him select his final squad. "These players have proven their worth and are the best of the lot," Costa affirmed. He noted, however, that players from Dempo and Churchill Brothers were not included due to their commitments to the I-League.

Reflecting on the team's growth, Costa said, "I think this year we’ve come back with strength and energy that has brought us here today. The boys have done a great job from day one, and we're looking to finish with pride and success. We’re hopeful for the best outcome."

As a former player turned coach, Costa often sits with his players to analyze their performances in practice matches and training sessions. With a whistle in his mouth, he is always ready to lead by example at the training ground, as seen during a recent session at the DYSA Ground in Santa Cruz.

Sources also indicated that defender Joseph Clemente is likely to be appointed captain of the squad for the tournament.
