Cunchelim Sports Club eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Assonora United in a GFA 2nd Division League match at Poriat grounds, on Saturday.
The teams played almost on an equal footing with play being mostly restricted to midfield in the first session. It was a must-win game for both the teams to stay in contention for the play-off stage. After the win, Cunchelim took their tally to 15 points from 8 matches, while Assonora stay on 11 points from 7 matches.
After a goalless first half, Cunchelim took the lead just three minutes after the restart as Rohan Kamble scored from inside the penalty box, 1-0. Ten minutes later, Cunchelim’s Yallappa Satyappago saw his weak shot from close being collected by Assonora keeper Chandan.
Another chance went begging for Cunchelim when the Assonora keeper and defender Sidhan collided and the ball rolled to Ganesh, who failed to guide the ball into an unguarded goal. However in the 83rd minute, Cunchelim doubled the lead when Som Shekhar sent a delightful chip inside the Assonora 18-yard box where Ganesh beat the advancing keeper Chandan and sent a cross to Yallappa, who tapped it home, 2-0.
At Duler stadium, St Anthony’s Sports Club, Marna drubbed Pilerne Sports Club 4-1. Marna went into the breather with a one-goal lead. In the 28th minute, Gopal Shirodkar sent a neat pass to a well-position Vipul Pednekar, who intelligently chipped the ball over an advancing Pilerne keeper, 1-0.
On resumption of play, Marna colts hammered three more goals. In the 58th minute, Sangam collected a through pass from Siddhant who in turn released the ball to Kashiram, who placed the ball home, 2-0. It did not take long for Marna to net the third goal as Siddhant scored with a power-packed strike, 3-0.
Though Pilerne were reduced 10 men with the sending off Alrich DeSouza for using foul language, Jesley Baptista scored with a neat placement, 3-1. In the closing stages of the match, Anslem scored the fourth goal for Marna to make it 4-1.
