Curtorim Gymkhana scored late in the second half to snatch a close 3-2 win against Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda and storm into the quarter-finals of the South Goa McDowell’s No 1 Yaari Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Cuncolim Union at Government Village School ground, Cuncolim on Friday.
There was no score at half time. Curtorim Gymkhana played an attacking game from the outset and created scoring chances.
But the opposition keeper kept the attackers at bay with fine saves.
At the other end, Don Bosco Oratory too had their share of scoring chances only for their forwards let it go waste from close range .
Post resumption, Don Bosco Oratory went on the offensive and enjoyed more of the ball possession. They dominance yielded fruition when Clestern Araujo fired home the first goal at the start of the session.
Spurred by the lead, Don Bosco Oratory upped the ante and launched a flurry of attacks. Five minutes later, Cliff Barettto ‘s blistering shot crashed into the nets.
Down 0-2, Curtorim Gymkhana continued to play with their chins up taking the fight to the other camp. Curtorim’s forwards and midfielders
began to slowly seize
control over the game,
keeping the DBO defenders on their toes.
Curtorim Gymkhana reduced the margin in the 66th minute when Milagres Fernandes ‘s brilliant shot beat the rival goalkeeper.
The reducer boosted the morale of Curtorim Gymkhana as they mounted tremendous pressure on the rival citadel. Minutes later, Milagres Feranndes’ well executed volley eluded the rival goalkeeper.
With the scores leveled at 2-2, the spectators were kept at tenterhooks. With time running out, Velson Fernandes struck the match winner late in the second half for the Curtorim side to fashion a dramatic turnaround victory.
