Speaking to media persons after chairing the State Road Safety Council (SRSC) meeting, Transport Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said, “Instead of issuing them challans for violating rules, we may detain their vehicles and release it only after they return wearing a helmet. It is not merely the question of following rules, but the safety of the people. We plan to implement this soon across the State.”
It was also informed during the meeting that, the Traffic Cell in the last financial year issued 50,000 challans to those riding without helmet.
Speaking further, Dhavalikar informed, “We have deliberated that immediately the PWD should take up the 33 black spots (areas prone to accidents) on priority basis for improvement of roads. Once the estimates are made and sent to the PWD, funds will be provided by Transport Department and the work on the same would be taken up.”
Installation of CCTVs on all roads across the State with the assistance from the Centre was also discussed at the meeting.
