Dempo Juniors registered a 2-1 win over AA de Moira in a Geno-GFA First Division League match played at Duler stadium, here on Tuesday.
All the goals came in the second session of play. After the win, Dempo Juniors have 11 points from 8 matches, while Moira have 10 points from 8 matches.
The first 20 minutes of the match were restricted to midfield with the both the keepers being hardly tested. In the 21st minute, Moira’s Klusner Pereira saw his free kick kiss the crossbar and travel out. Four minutes later, Klusner sent a fine cross at Dempo’s goal area which was blocked by keeper Wellyster and cleared by defender Deepraj Gouekar before Savio could do any damage.
Dempo Juniors, who fielded 10 U-20 players, had the first crack at the goal in the 31st minute where a 30-yard free kick by Ariston Costa saw Moira keeper fumble with his collection and the ball slipped from his grasp for a corner.
After crossing over, Dempo Juniors scored two quick goals in the 51st and 61st minutes of play. Dempo’s Danstan Fernandes got hold of a loose ball inside the penalty box and drilled a power-packed right footer which crashed into the back of the Moira nylons 1-0. The Golden Eagles doubled their lead when a free kick by Altroy Rodrigues from the edge of the box beat the Moira keeper to enter the goal, 2-0.
The Moira colts went all out in search of the goals and they managed to pull a goal back in the 67th minute. Hard-working Lloyd Mascarenhas moved from the right flank and crossed the ball into the goal area where the keeper fumbled and then defender Deepraj delayed in clearing the ball. Moira’s Rudresh Tendulkar, who had moved upfront, slammed the ball into the goal, 2-1.
The Moira colts time and again attacked the rival citadel but a goal eluded them. The best chance for an equaliser came in the 79th minute where a cross by Klusner saw Llyod fumble with his header and the ball rolled to Tippanna who blasted it wide.
Dempo’s Altroy Rodrigues received the Man of the match award at the hands of Katz Naidoo, Technical Director of Dempo SC.
