"The initiative to organise the tournament is in memory of my grandfather Dr Filipe Armindo Pinto (1903-1967), whose 50th death anniversary was observed on September 7," Kabir Pinto Makhija, ex-deputy Mayor of CCP while addressing a press conference here on Friday.
"I have been associated with Clube Vasco da Gama - one of the oldest clubs in Panjim- to organise the First Dr Filipe Pinto Memorial All Goa Major Ranking Table Tennis Tournament. The tournament has received a Major Ranking from the Goa Table Tennis Association and will be an annual event in the Goa table tennis calendar," added Kabir, highlighting that Dr Pinto was an educationist, a linguist, a lover of sports and a philanthropist. "He served as the last Reitor of Liceu Nacional Afonso de Albuquerque in Goa under the Portuguese regime and was the first Principal of the Lyceum (Government Higher Secondary School) after the Liberation of Goa. Dr Filipe Pinto was the first Director of Education after Liberation (9th May 1962- 23rd August 1964)," he further divulged. The tournament will be held in the following categories: Cadet Girls & Cadet Boys; Sub-Junior Girls & Sub-Junior Boys;Junior Girls & Junior Boys; Women's Singles & Men's Singles.
Entries should be submitted at Clube Vasco da Gama in Panjim. The last date for accepting entries will be September 16 upto 4pm. The draws will be held the same day (Sept 16) at 6 pm at the club premises (telephone number 0832-2423768).
The prize money is as per what is decided by the Goa Table Tennis Association for a ranked tournament. All the matches will start at 3.30pm daily.
Town and Country Planning, Vijai Sardesai will be the Chief Guest for the opening ceremony to be held at 4 pm on September 18 at the venue.
Chief Minister ManoharParrikar will be the Chief Guest at the Awards Ceremony and give away the trophies and prizes to the winners on September 24 at Clube Vasco da Gama at 7.30pm.
