FC Goa edged past Sirvodem Sports Club 1-0 to win the Niobe Fernandes Women’s Festival football tournament organised by Sirvodem Sports Club in association with Good Shepherd Organisation, Fatorda at Sinquetim, Navelim on Wednesday.
Both the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer and kept the crowds on their toes. The all-important goal was headed home by Jovi Fernandes. The second half saw Sirvodem Sports Club in dominance but FC Goa defenders were stubborn and protected their slender lead. FC Goa had few scoring chances but their forwards misfired from close range.
In all four teams participated I Compansion, YFA, Sirvodem Sports Club Navelim and FC Goa.
Organising chairman Francisco Fernandes said their main aim to organise this women’s football festival was to develop women’s football and the profits earned will be donated to the orphans.
Fr Elvis Godinho, assistant parish priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church Navelim was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runner’s up in the presence of other dignitaries.
