Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna produced a strong team performance to register a facile 2-0 win against Our Lady of Rosary High School, Fatorda and emerge as the champions of Salcete Taluka Under-17 Boys Subroto Mukherjee inter school football tournament, organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at SAG Artifical Turf Ground, Fatorda on Monday. Fr Agnel led 1-0 at the breather.
Dominating play from the start, Fr Agnel created many openings and launched a barrage of attacks against the rival citadel.
The Rosary goal was breached in the 29th minute as Melroy Moura slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. Fr Agnel had a couple of scoring chances but their forwards Velroy Borges and Mohan Mesquita were not at their best.
Fr Agnel continued to hold sway in the second period and Johan Mesquita sealed the rivals’ fate when he beat the rival goalkeeper with a stiff shot in the 59th minute. Fr Agnel have now qualified for the South District
final.
Ivan D’Sa, physical education teacher of Fr Multipurpose HSS, said “We need to be consistent. Two goals today will mean nothing if we fail to maintain the momentum in the next match. The early goal set
the pace.”
