The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sought five days' time from the Goa Police to furnish documents related to funds released to Goa Cricket Association (GCA), in connection with an alleged fraud case involving the Association's three senior officials.
Earlier this week, a team of Goa Police had met BCCI officials at its Mumbai headquarters, seeking details of funds released to GCA, a senior police official told PTI. The cricket board has asked for five days' time to share details as the information sought dates back to 2007-08, the official added.
The Economic Offences Cell of the state police had arrested GCA president Chetan Dessai, secretary Vinod Phadke and treasurer Akbar Mulla on June 15 for allegedly siphoning fund worth Rs 3.13 crore.
As per the complaint, the trio had allegedly opened account in Development Credit Bank in an unauthorised way and encashed Rs 2.87 crore that was released by BCCI to GCA for the development of the game in the state. "We are trying to get the detail about the cheque and also whether more such funds were given to GCA that has gone unaccounted," a police official said.
All three GCA officials have refuted the charge of their involvement in withdrawing the money through illegally opened account. Police are now trying to check who collected the cheque from BCCI's Mumbai office.
The then GCA President Dayanand Narvekar was unavailable for statement in the case as he is currently undergoing a treatment in Mumbai, the official said. Once Narvekar is fit to give his statement, more inputs about this cheque would be known, he said. The arrested GCA officials were freed on bail by a local court on June 24 on the condition that they should not visit GCA office for the next 15 days.
