Goa emerged victorious at the finals of the 2nd Modern Kho-Kho inter-state championship, defeating Karnataka 2-0 at the government ground in Sanguem on Wednesday.
This championship was jointly organised by the Modern Kho-Kho Federation and Modern Kho-Kho Association. Tamil Nadu was placed third, followed by Maharashtra in the fourth spot. In all, 10 teams participated in the tournament.
Individual prizes were awarded to Prajwal of team Karnataka (best attacker), Simon Noronha of team Goa (best defender) and Lokesh Lamani of team Goa (versatile player).
The winning Goa team comprised Divino Miranda (captain), Lokesh Lamani, Shubham Gaonkar, Laxmikant Velip, Alexander Dias, Savio Noronha, Sadiq Sheikh, Samesh Gaonkar, Edgar Simon Noronha, Cyril Clemento, Ajay Velip and Yogesh Gaonkar.
Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai, ZP President Navnath Naik, Sanguem Municipal Council Chairperson Queiroz Cruz, Sports Director V M Prabhudessai, Fomento Media Director and Group Editor Ishan Joshi, Goan Varta Editor Sanjay Dhavalikar, The Goan in School Editor Sharmila Guha, Sanguem councillors, Prakash Velip and Pramod Juvekar were also present at the finals. The Goan and Goan Varta are the media partners at the tournament.
Addressing a gathering during the prize-distribution ceremony, Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar stated that swiftness and agility were showcased in the modern Kho-Kho game.
“Sanguem taluka has lagged behind in sports. However, the Sanguem ground will be developed at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore, while the grounds at Netravali, Vadem and Bhati will also be renovated in Sanguem taluka,” Tawadkar added.
Sports director V M Prabhudessai was pleased that Goa had created history by winning the 2nd modern Kho-Kho championship.
“I was impressed by the organisation of this championship in Sanguem,” stated Prabhudessai.
MLA Subhash Phaldessai also spoke at the function.
