Goa went down to Hyderabad by 19 runs in their second match of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament in Vizag on Tuesday.
Electing to bat, Hyderabad posted a challenging total of 181/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Goa gave their opponents a run for their money, but in the end were restricted to 162/9.
Hyderabad got off to a good start with the openers Akshath Reddy (64) and Tanmay Agarwal (31) putting on 65 runs in 6.4 overs. Akshath was the most impressive of the two openers as he struck three sixers and five boundaries in his 40-ball knock. Tanmay hit five boundaries.
Captain A. Rayudu scored 44 runs off 30 balls with 2 sixers and 2 fours, to boost the Hyderabad total. He was dismissed by veteran Goan spinner Shadab Jakati, who also went on to pick K Sumanth. Shadab and Felix Alemao picked up two wickets each.
In reply, Goa lost Swapnil Asnodkar for 11 before fellow opener Amogh Desai (21) became Hyderabad's second victim, at the team total of 38 runs in 5 overs. Captain Sagun Kamat and wicket-keeper Keenan Vaz combined for a 74-run partnership for the third wicket, keeping Goa alive in the run-chase. However, Sagun (47 runs off 40 balls) and Keenan (33 off 24 balls) were dismissed on consecutive deliveries of the 14th over, leaving Goa at 112/4 in 13.3 overs.
With 70 runs needed off 39 deliveries, Goa needed the lower-middle order to fire without wasting too much time. However, Darshan Misal (2) got out cheaply while Achit Shigwan (17) and Shadab Jakati (20) were left with too much to do and could not keep up with the asking rate. Goa managed to reach 162/9 in the end, suffering a 19-run loss. Ravi Kiran claimed four wickets while Mehdi Hasan and Md Siraj took two wickets each for Hyderabad.
Goa will take on Tamil Nadu in their third match, to be played at Vizianagaram on Thursday.
