The Goa girls team finished as runners-up at the Agape Cup football tournament played at St Paul’s School Ground, Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Although they drew with Tamil Nadu 0-0, they fell short on goal difference in the round robin league matches.
The fourth Agape Cup all-India football championship was organised by the Sports Coalition of India by the John Paul II Foundation for Sports and the Catholic Diocese of Indore. The Goa team defeated Madhya Pradesh 2-0 and Maharashtra 4-0 and drew with Tamil Nadu girls 0-0. However Tamil Nadu got the winner’s trophy on better goal difference.
The Goa men’s team claimed third position as they lost by a solitary goal against hosts Madhya Pradesh in the semi-finals. In the group matches, they drew against Kerala 0-0, beat Delhi 2-1 and lost to Tamil Nadu 1-0, who ultimately won the
men’s title.
Tamil Nadu had won the first edition of the all-India football championship that was started in Goa by the John Paul II Foundation for Sports, while Kerala won the second and third editions of the event which is held annually.
The girls event was held for the first time and it is an initiative to bring all Christians from various denominations to come together under the Pontifical council of Christian Unity at the Vatican. The initiative has been very effective to bring players, not only for the football championship, but to a fellowship together and know more about
their faith.
