Stating that Goa was willing to host sports events at World championships level, Sports Minister Govind Gaude also informed that the State would host Khelo India Youth Games for first time in 2025-26.
Gaude spoke to reporters after inaugurating the 33rd National Powerlifting Championship at Ravindra Bhavan Baina in the presence of Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar and others on Monday evening.
"We have successfully hosted many sports events in Goa, including the National Games. We are now not only looking at the National Games but also eyeing to host a world championship in Goa. We have already received around 3-4 proposals for such world championship level events,” said Gaude.
“We will also host the Khelo India Youth Games for the first time in Goa in 2025-26, and we are confident that we will also host international championships very soon. We are confident of bidding for any kind of sports events in the near future.”
Speaking on the 33rd National Powerlifting Championship, Gaude said he was pleased to see a record number of participants at the event being hosted in Goa.
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar, who is also chairman of Goa Super Bodies Powerlifting Association which is organising this championship, said this is for the first time that there are around 2,000 participants besides the coaches from all 30 states.
“This 5-day competition will continue till October 18. We have around 90 participants from Goa in this tournament and we appeal to people to visit the Ravindra Bhavan and witness the national championships,” said Amonkar.
