Goa went down by just three runs to Karnataka in their BCCI Under-23 One-day League south zone campaign-opener, in Chennai on Sunday.
Put in to bat, Karnataka posted 272 runs in their allotted 50 overs. Goa were all out in 49.5 overs, scoring 269 runs.
For Karnataka, V R Milind with 69 runs, was one of the three batsmen, who got out in their sixties - captain and opener Nischal D (64) and K L Shrijith (64), being the other two. Bharath K N contributed 32 runs. Goa’s Vedant Naik was the top wicket-taker with figures of 5/69, to his credit. Felix Alemao claimed two wickets, while Vijesh Prabhudesai and Vaibhav Govekar took a wicket each.
In reply, Goa lost wickets at regular intervals to start with but got into a groove with the 64-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Goa wicket-keeper Aditya Suryawanshi was the top scorer with 56 runs off 54 balls (5x4, 1x6). V G Kahlon also made a half-century, scoring a 60-ball 54, studded with five boundaries. Vaibhav Govekar contributed 43 runs.
Goa’s tail wagged with Felix (15), Vedant (13) and Amulya Pandrekar scoring 12 runs, but the asking rate of 10 runs in the last over, proved beyond their reach. Prateek Jain, V Vyshak, Ananda D and D Avinash took two wickets each for Karnataka.
Goa will next take on Hyderabad on Monday.
