Goan FC beat Churchill Brothers Football Club 1-0 in a GFA Professional League match at Nagoa Panchayat Sports Complex, on Tuesday. Striker Aaren D’Silva was the man who got the winning goal in the 39th minute from a cross from Liston Colaco.
Churchill Brothers dominated the proceedings initially and enjoyed better ball possession. They got the first chance to break the deadlock when striker Lamgoulen Hangshing’s header from close range headed wide. Churchill Brothers got yet another chance to score when defender Nickson Castana’s right-footer was blocked by the Goan FC goalkeeper Shubham Dessai.
On the other hand, Goan FC went close to surging ahead but striker Liston Colaco’s snap shot was kept out by Churchill Brothers keeper Kunzang Bhutia. Churchill Brothers nearly broke the deadlock when Aniston Fernandes fed Nickson Castana inside the rival penalty box but a shot from the last named hit the post.
Goan FC scored the winning goal in the 39th minute when striker Liston Colaco picked up the ball from his own colleague and beat the rival defenders and essayed a fine defence-splitting pass to lanky striker Aaren D’Silva, who made no mistake in punting the ball in.
Post resumption, Goan FC enjoyed the lion’s share of exchanges and more ball possession and had a chance to increase their tally but defender Saviour Gama’s rasping shot off a pass from Liston Colaco was fisted away by goalkeeper Bhutia. In the 58th minute, another Saviour header was fisted away by the rival goalkeeper.
Churchill Brothers got an opportunity when Nickson Castana sent a free kick at the rival goal but it was handled easily by Goan FC goalkeeper Shubham Dhas.
Churchill Brothers brought in fresh legs in search of the equaliser but they failed to convert in a one-on-one situation. Churchill missed yet another chance as Lamgoulen Hangshing shot wide after receiving a pass from substitute Chester
Paul Lyngdoh.
With the time running out, the Red Machines kept attacking and Nickson Castana’s free kick was parried away by Goan FC goalkeeper Shubham Dhas. Goan FC too had a chance to increase their tally late in the match but substitute Nester Dias failed to connect a Liston Colaco
flag kick.
