The John Paul II Foundation for Sports, Goa, which is the Sports Ministry of the Archdiocese of Goa and dealing with developing and teaching life skills through the medium of sports, has registered with the Goa Football Association to participate in football competitions as Compassion FC.
Since 2012, the foundation has been conducting football festivals and competitions for the underprivileged and marginalised children of various organisations and shelters dealing with orphans, single parents and children from slums and streets.
The new club is to provide a platform for these children through football to face a variety of complex issues daily like sexual and domestic abuse, unemployment, alcoholism, drug usage, malnutrition and mental health issues, which disengage them from society and prevent them from living a life of dignity.
In order to further this endeavour, the foundation has established the Compassion Football Club with an aim to provide long-term solutions by providing a platform to develop and showcase their sporting talents, thereby improving their living standards.
Compassion FC has been registered with the GFA for participating in the Under-14 and Under-16 leagues from September 2018. The club will conduct trials for its teams on August 15 at Fr Agnel’s High School ground, Pilar from 2 pm onwards.
Compassion FC will provide the children with football kits, nutrition and transport allowance. The players will have an opportunity to participate in national championships being held for underprivileged children and will also be trained in life skills.
