Marc Caterers Nuvem overcame the challenge of United Club Fatorda Veterans 1-0 to win the 17th VM Salgaocar Memorial Veterans Soccer Tournament organised by Prime Sports Club, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando Benaulim on Sunday. Striker Andrew Teodosio's early strike proved to be the golden winner for Marc Caterers.
The summit clash began with a bang as even before Fatorda Veterans could get the feel of the ball, Marc Caterers struck an early goal in the third minute when striker Andrew Teodosio made an opportunity count by slamming the loose ball into the nylons following a corner kick by Anthony Patieu.
The goal silenced the Fatorda fans and despite the continued drizzle Fatorda fought back and made inroads but striker Mithun Carvalho was well policed by rival defenders Baptist D'Mello and Rafiq Bepari.
In the second session, Nuvem found more possession with their playmaker, former Dempo striker Marcus Carvalho and Mathew Costa tirelessly operating in the midfield but front men Francisco Vodlo and Seby Vaz were unable to consolidate the lead.
In the last quarter, Fatorda virtually camped in the rival area but Menino Miranda and Remedios Barretto efforts were saved by rival goalkeeper Camilo Barretto. Nuvem defender Baptist D'Mello, Nana Borkar, Rafiq Bepari had to work overtime to protect their slender lead and did enough to give their team a glittering trophy.
Marc Caterers Nuvem, were richer by Rs 25,000 and the winners trophy, while United Cub of Fatorda Veterans had to be content with Rs 20,000 and a trophy.
Earlier, the chief guest, Caitu D'Silva, former MLA of Benaulim constituency, and guest of honour, Rev Fr Lucio Dias, Episcopal Vicar, South Goa, awarded scholarships to the top SSC rankers of Benaulim and later gave away the prizes to the teams in the presence of Solan Furtado, Trevor Fernandes, Leslie Dourado and Boaventura C Leitao. Club President, Lalita Correira Afonso, welcomed and Anthony Rodrigues, Organising Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks.
