SDK Ceramics and Verenkers reigned supreme, winning the Men’s and Under 15 Team championship titles respectively, at the 4th Invitational Table Tennis Tournament organised by Miramar Sports Club in collaboration with Goa Table Tennis Association and the Sports Authority of Goa, at Multipurpose Stadium, Peddem on Sunday night.
In the men’s team event, SDK Ceramics, having in their ranks India men’s No 4 Sudhanshu Grover and 7-time junior national champion Abhishek Yadav, blanked
out Verenkers A 3-0 to
emerge well deserved winners. In the Under 15 team event, there was a reversal of fortunes with Verenkers emerging as winners with a similar 3-0 margin over SDK Ceramics.
In individual events, the match of the day was the men’s singles final which was an absorbing contest between India men’s No 6 Arjun Ghosh and India Youth No 4 Ronit Bhanja, The match was a see saw battle with fortunes
fluctuating from set to set. In the end, it was Ronit edging out his opponent and
doubles compatriot Arjun 4-3 (14-12, 9-11, 11-3, 7-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-9).
In the men’s doubles final, Ronit Bhanja and Arjun Ghosh, who are the current national doubles champions, teamed up to beat Wesley Rozario and Shreyal Telang 3-1 ( 6-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-7).
Arjun Ghosh / Oishwarrya Deb withstood a strong challenge from Wesley Do Rosario / Eleanor Do Rosario before prevailing to a 3-2 (11-4, 8-11, 11-3, 8-11, 11-9) win to lift the mixed doubles title.
The under-15 singles final was a similar tough battle with Anshuman Agarwal
putting it across Samyak Kashyap with a narrow 3-2 margin. He won 11-5, 5-11,11-6,10-12,11-8.
The ladies singles witnessed a near flawless performance from Oishwarrya Deb who cruised to a
comfortable 3-0 (11-9,11-5,11-4) win over Prutha Parrikar in a classy performance.
Sudin Verenker, vice president, Goa TT Association; Kabir Pinto Makhija,
former deputy mayor, CCP along with Miramar Sports Club officials Joel Andrade (president), Noel Estibeiro (vice president), Myron
Pereira (treasurer) and Sandeep Heble (tournament advisor) graced the closing function.
