Hosts Navelim Villagers Union edged out Cuncolim Union 1-0 to storm into the final of All Goa Bernardo Furtado memorial inter village football tournament organized by Navelim Villagers Union at Rosary grounds, Navelim on Saturday.
In an evenly-poised battle, both the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer and kept the crowds on their toes. As the match progressed, and backed by voiceferous home crowd, Navelim Villagers Union controlled the midfield and enjoyed the lion's share of exchanges.The all-important goal came in the 10th minute when striker Auelon Gomes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot off a pass from Aldrich Coelho in the 10th minute.
Stung by the early reversal, Cuncolim Union tried their best to come back into the game but their efforts were nullified by the rival defenders. Post resumption, Navelim Villagers Union continued in the same vein with their forwards launching a barrage of attacks. However, Cuncolim's stubborn defence frustrated their attacks with neat tackles. With time running out, Cuncolim Union made last-ditch efforts and pressed more men upfront but this move yielded no results.
