Our Lady of Rosary High School, Fatorda beat title contenders, Holy Spirit Institute Margao 5-4 via tie-breaker, to clinch the Ramnath D. Volvotkar memorial U-17 inter-school football tournament organized by Insight Society in association with DSYA, Damodar High School and Damodar Higher Secondary School at Gudi “ Paroda on Saturday.
In an exciting final played at Gudi ground, both the teams displayed a good brand of soccer with Our Lady of Rosary HS excelling in defense. Rosary School missed several easy scoring chances in the first session through Maxwell Furtado.
Tahir Shaikh and Richard Fernandes, strikers of Holy Spirit Institute, had no chance to score with a water-tight defense of Holy Rosary High School led by Joswel Cardozo, who was later adjudged as the best defender of the tournament.
As both the teams failed to score in normal time, the game was taken to the tie-breaker. Maxwell Furtado, Syden Furtado, Jordon Borges, Valjoe Pinto and Movin Gauncar scored for the winning Our Lady of Rosary High School side while Tahir Shaikh, Madan Pomburphekar, Mevan Dias and Saideep Pomburphekar found the target for Holy Spirit Institute.
Our Lady of Rosary High School were richer by Rs 10,000 and a glittering trophy while Holy Spirit Institute had to settle with Rs 7,000 and a trophy. Minister for Town & Country Planning Vijai Sardesai was the chief guest and handed over the prizes in the presence of businessman Sudesh Bhise, Dr Uday C. Gaunkar, principal of Damodar Higher Secondary School and Jovita D’costa “ vice-principal. While Binny Parulekar welcomed the guests, Swiza Fernandes introduced the guests and Jovita D’costa proposed the vote of thanks.
