Players bear brunt of SAG's diet allowance cuts

Athletes uncertain about their compensation ahead of Diwali

The players seem to be the biggest causality of the decision of the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) to disburse a reduced amount far from what was claimed by Goans Hockey for the diet camp conducted ahead of the National Games 2023.

Goans Hockey have received Rs.6,45,230 for the diet camp on 11th October while the balance amount of Rs. 2,12,620 is still due to the diet camp, Goans Hockey officials have claimed.

Players of both the men and women team who took part in the diet camp in Margao and Mapusa, including those dropped were to receive varying amounts.

Besides the players, coaches along with Goans Hockey officials Inacio Fernandes and Beny Viegas were due to receive the diet camp allowance for being part of the National Games 2023.

All the players who were part of the National Games were called for a meeting by Goans Hockey officials at Mapusa recently to complete the disbursement of the diet allowance.

Goan Hockey officials while addressing the players at the meeting said they have received diet camp dues of Rs. 6 lakhs and informed that the diet allowance amount will be transferred to their respective personal bank accounts before Diwali.

“They took a xerox copy of our personal bank pass book and told us that the diet allowance will be paid before Diwali,” said a player.

The players were told that they will not get the full amount which has been mentioned in the bills submitted to SAG but a reduced amount.

“We were told a certain amount will be deducted from what has been mentioned against our name, what is the amount we do not know,” added the player.

Asked as to the reason for the justification in the reduced amount the player said; “We have been given to understand that refreshments were given for a few days.”

“The fact is for only two days pau bhaji and mineral water was provided for the players in Margao no other refreshments were given over the days the camp was held,” asserted goalkeeper Conan Fernandes, a former Bank of India player who played in the Mumbai Super League before moving to Goa. Conan was one of the many Goan players, men and women, who were dropped a couple of days before the game.

Goans officials once again reiterated that they have been sending Goan teams for the various championships from their own funds as SAG has not released the funds for the last one and half year which are due to them for taking part in the various national level championships.
