Brian Mascarenhas scored a late winner to give Velsao Sports and Cultural Club their first win in the competition following their 2-1 victory against Panjim Footballers in the Goa Football Association Selvel Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa.
By virtue of this win, Velsao grab four points while Panjim remain on six points.
Jesloy Moniz gave Velsao lead in the 39th minute before Akram Yadwad equalised in the 79th minute. But Brian buried the game in the 87th minute to secure full points for the South Goa team.
Needing a win to regain their confidence, Velsao had their attempt in the 17th minute when winger Rohan Rodrigues fed Jesloy with an aerial pass, however the latter failed to keep his shot on target. Later it was Rohan who missed a chance to put his side ahead in the game.
Velsao SCC finally broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when Brian sent a cross to Jesloy, who this time made no mistake in putting the ball at the back of the net.
It was a transformed performance by Panjim in the second session and had a chance to get back into the game early in the second session. Pandurang’s cross was cleared in time by Presley Mascarenhas, thwarting the danger. However, the ball went to Vallmiky Miranda, whose shot missed the target by whiskers.
Panjim finally restored parity in the 79th minute through substitute Akram Yadwad who guided in Lloyd’s cross from close. But Velsao came back strongly and regained their lead just when it looked like the match was heading for a draw. Brian scored from a stiff grounder to make it 2-1.
