Shourya wins triple crown in Bahrain

PANAJI

Goa’s Shourya Joshi’s dream season continued as he added more titles to his name within a few weeks in Bahrain. At the beginning of May, Shourya -- a young rising talent from Goa -- was in the news for his twin U-15 and U-17 titles in the India Club Open tournament in Dubai. In Bahrain a few weeks later, Shourya bettered his performance to win a triple crown at the GCC Junior Open Tournament 2018.

Some beautiful crosscourt drops followed by fearsome smashes marked Shourya’s 23-21, 21-16 straight sets win in U-19 against Sarvesh Rajkumar from Kuwait. Earlier in quarter-finals, he won against Egypt’s seeded player Omar Fenoon 15-7, 15-9 and in the semi-finals, he beat Nadeem Nahar (Bahrain) 21-13, 21-7.

Shourya also went on to win U-17 and U-15 titles, beating his opponent Nabhan Najeeb 21-18, 21-3 in U-17 and 21-19, 21-13 in U-15 to complete his triple crown haul. “I thank my Goan coach Govind Navelkar who has been instrumental in shaping my initial career and my present coaches at Prime Star Sports Academy in Dubai where I am currently training,” said Shourya after his triple crown win.
