Reliance Foundation Youth Sports “ Junior Boys Football held its first matches in Goa at the Father Agnel Grounds in Verna. The city got its first taste of the amateur football competition with the first match held between St Anthony’s High School,Majorda and Shantadurga High School, Bicholim in the Junior Boys category. The match resulted in cakewalk for St Anthony’s High School despite going a man down in the dying stages of the match.
The match saw St Anthony’s School in ascendency right from the whistle.
It was only a matter of time for St Anthony's to score as they kept piling on the pressure. In the 10th minute, the Shantadurga defense gave way and conceded two quickfire goals in two minutes with Meuton Fernandes opening the scoring in the 10th minute before teammate Ashley Fernandes scored in the 11th minute. Maison D’Cunha further piled on the misery for Shantadurga before halftime as he scored his side’s third in the 27th minute. Just 2 minutes after halftime, Lenny Vaz killed the encounter by scoring to give his team an unassailable 4-0 lead. Although, a rash decision from St Anthony’s number 3, Ashran Mascarenas, saw him pick up his second yellow of the match resulting in a red for the player which left his team to see out the final stages a man down. In the end, St Anthony's had done enough to ensure a 4-0 victory moving them to the next round of the competition.
The action will continue on Tuesday, where three more matches are scheduled in the qualifying stages of the Junior Boys category beckoning a new beginning in the State to develop school and college sports across all socio-economic variables.
