Ignitus Basketeers and Sonics were crowned the boys' and girls' champions at the State basketball championships which concluded on Sunday at the Don Bosco Fatorda grounds, marking the end of an intense competition.
In a hard-fought girls' match, Sonics managed to emerge victorious over Sharda Mandir Panaji with a final score of 27-15. Despite maintaining a close contest for nearly three quarters, Sonics eventually asserted their dominance, pulling away in the final quarter to claim the championship title.
Meanwhile, in the boys' finals -- a first between two Margao teams -- Ignitus Basketeers staged a remarkable comeback after trailing by 10 points to secure a thrilling 36-32 victory against hosts Don Bosco Fatorda. Jude led the way for the triumphant Ignitus Basketeers with an impressive 15 points, while Sean contributed 10 points as the top scorer for the Fatorda team.
The awards ceremony was graced by chief guest Sidney and Dhanvanti Furtado, former state-level basketball players, alongside the esteemed presence of the Rector of Don Bosco Fatorda and current secretary of the Goa Basketball Association, Fr Ralin de Souza. They distributed prizes and trophies, acknowledging the remarkable performances and sportsmanship displayed by all participating teams.
