Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna completed their group engagements on a high note with an emphatic 4-1 win against Government Higher Secondary School, East Kanneng, Arunachal Pradesh, in Pool A of the 64th Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, on Saturday.
Although an inconsequential match of the pool, Fr Agnel HSS refused to relent even though the team from North East opened the scoring in the 21st minute as defender Peter Gyadi rose to head in a corner kick.
Down by a goal, Fr Agnel HSS brought in key players Declan Monteiro, Frieden Mendes, Casvino Fernandes and Rohit Bangalore, and that was the infusion needed as Frieden Mendes scored a fine solo to restore parity 1-1 in the 39th minute.
Five minutes later, Fr Agnel HSS took the lead for the first time as Frieden Mendes dribbled four defenders and beautifully placed past an onrushing Arunachal Pradesh goalkeeper.
Man of the match Frieden then turned provider as the swift-moving Declan Monteiro was at hand to make it 3-1 in the 56th minute. Elton Fernandes snuffed out any further chances of a fightback as he rounded off the scoring in the dying moments of the match to keep an impeccable record of four wins and a maximum 12 points for Fr Agnel HSS.
“The aim now is to ensure our team keeps their focus as this is the business end of the competition from now on,” related Fr Agnelo Gomes, Director of Fr Agnel HSS.
“Our goal here is to see how far we can take this team of talented youngsters in this competition. We have confidence in this side, and now on, it is just a matter of time before we can have them deliver,” he added.
Fr Agnel HSS are now set for their knockout quarterfinals scheduled on Monday.
