Ten-man Navelim Villagers Union rallied from behind to defeat St Rock's Youth Club, Calata- Majorda 2-1 to cruise into the quarter-finals of All Goa Our Lady of Assumpta Trophy inter-village football tournament organised by Sarzora Sports Club at SAG grounds, Sarzora on Saturday. Navelim Villagers Union were trailing 0-1 at half time. St Rock's started the game on an attacking note and troubled the rival defence with well orchestrated raids.
Persistent forays paid off and in the 35th minute striker Flexbern Ferrao bulged the net. Spurred by the lead, St Rock's raided the rival goal but without success as their forwards were erratic after reaching the rival danger zone. At the other end, Navelim Villagers Union were subdued but as the match progressed they took over the reigns.
Crossing over, Navelim Villagers Union came back more organized and created many openings with their forwards showing urgency that put tremendous pressure on the rival citadel. Their efforts fetched dividends and in the 41st minute, Allister Gomes cancelled the lead off a pass from Auelon Gomes.
Navelim Villagers Union suffered a jolt when Akshay Shiolkar was red carded by the referee for using vile language. Despite being short of one man, Navelim Villagers Union remained unperturbed and in the 58th minute Clive Mascarenhas sealed the rival fate and trooped out worthy winners.
