Vaishnavi Prabhu entered the semi-finals in girls U-21 boxing event by medal hopeful Aashreya Naik suffered a shock defeat at the 2nd Khelo India Youth Games in Pune on Wednesday.
With this win by Vaishnavi, Goa are assured of two medals in boxing as Suman Yadav(U-17) had already booked the last-four spot on Tuesday. Vaishnavi and Suman are roaring with confidence to get the elusive gold medals for Goa, with the respective bouts being slated for Friday.
Meanwhile, Goa’s bronze-medallist last year Aashreya had to face an upset defeat in the first round from an equally promising boxer from Haryana. In a tough contest, both the boxers gave their best shot in a punch to punch, jab to jab contest with the score-card reading 2-3 against Aashreya.
In the boys U-17 category, Goa’s Chotu Kumar lost against a very quick boxer from Haryana with 4-1 decision while Ganesh Mohite went down 0-5.
In football for boys U-21, Goa will face Mizoram in the first semi-final at the athletic stadium Balewadi, at 5pm on Thursday. Kerala will face Punjab in the second semi-finals.
