Vasco Veterans secured a hard-fought 5-4 tiebreaker win (1-1 full-time) against Chinchinim Veterans to book their place in the semifinals of the Above 50 competition of the GVFC Veterans Football at the Sinquetim ground.
Vasco Veterans took the lead when Nagesh found the back of the net from inside the opposition box. Chinchinim didn’t have to wait long to find the equaliser as birthday boy Aldrin’s looping header found the far corner past Joao Fernandes on the Vasco goal.
Both teams went all out for the match-winner and Vasco went closest, but the Chinchinim goalkeeper flung himself to his right to deny an Alaric Gomes try. In the tiebreaker, Alaric, Jack, Nagesh, Nelson and Agnelo converted for Vasco. Jerry, Inacio, Aldrin and Baptist converted for Chinchinim while Joao Fernandes saved off Mahesh to ensure Vasco Veterans advance to the semifinals against Verna Veterans.
Don Bosco down Fr Agnelo on penalties
Don Bosco Fatorda squeezed past Fr Agnelo YC, Paroda 6-5 via tiebreaker to move into the quarterfinals of 21st Fr Basilio Andrade football tournament at Musson ground, Majorda.
The teams were tied 2-2 after regulation time. The teams were evenly balanced and matched each other in terms of ball possession. Don Bosco had three clear opportunities, two in the first half and one in the second half, but strikers Velton D'Souza and Joylex Vaz missed sitters.
Similar was the case with Fr Agnelo, Paroda as their forwards Shelton Fernandes and Kanchan Kiro lost three good chances. For Don Bosco, Maxwell Furtado found the net in the 42nd minute. However, their joy did not last for long as Cyril Dias equalised in the 45th minute.
Don Bosco took the lead again in the 64th minute through Hunstum Furtado, making it 2-1 in favour of Don Bosco. At the fag end, Cyril Dias scored his brace in the 68th minute, 2-2.
In the tiebreaker, Don Bosco scored through Sydon Furtado, Valito Miranda, Velton D'Souza and Anisley Araujo. Fr Agnelo YC, Paroda found the mark through Cyril Dias, Fulford Fernandes and Xlyn Oliveria.
