Debutants Velsao Sports & Cultural Club and Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem played out a goalless draw in a GFA Professional League match at Rosary ground, Navelim on Thursday. Both teams created chances but could not get past the solid defences at either end.
With this draw, Guardian Angel took their tally to 21 points from 19 matches, while Velsao finished their engagements with 25 points from 22 matches.
Velsao made their intention clear from the beginning when captain Joseph Pereira outwitted rival defenders after being fed by Aslon Olveira but his try flew over the crossbar.
At the other end, Guardian Angel striker Clinton Niasso broke away and had a shot at goal which was blocked by Velsao goalkeeper Presley Mascarenhas in the 30th minute. The game thereafter was a mix of attempts from both sides as the first half came to closure with forwards muffing easy chances in one-on-one situations.
Velsao kept pressing hard and midfielder Sushant Borkar sent a defence-splitting pass into the rival penalty box but before Joseph Pereira could do any damage, a rival defender cleared the ball.
The second session saw Guardian Angel exert control and foray forward regularly. In one forward move, Joaquim Carvalho faltered in front of the rival goal in the 57th minute. Nicholas Rodrigues then made a beautiful run from the right flank but ballooned over from close range after getting an assist from Jesloy Moniz. Jesloy himself was denied when his blistering shot hit the post.
The closest Velsao came to beating the Guardiain Angel rearguard was when Remedious Vaz missed an open scoring opportunity when he shot wide from close range late in the match.
