MARGAO
Cortalim Villagers SSWA wasted plenty of chances to settle for a goalless draw against Mormugao UCSC in their GFA Second Division League play-off at SAG Artificial Turf, Fatorda on Tuesday.
Cortalim Villagers, who fielded a young inexperienced team, only had themselves to blame as they wasted umpteen scoring chances. Sunny Colaco alone muffed six sitters as Cortalim Villagers made continuous raids. They had a chance to break the deadlock soon after the kick-off when Sunny had only rival goalkeeper to beat but he shot wide from close range.
At the other end, Mormugao UCSC were slow to get off the blocks and Cortalim Villagers had another golden chance to surge ahead but striker Sunny misfired from hand shaking distance. Midway in the opening session, Sunny again ballooned over from close range after Ivon Gama had laid him on the platter.
Post resumption, Cortalim Villagers continued to enjoy the lion’s share of exchanges but Sunny Colaco blasted the ball wide much to the dismay of Cortalim supporters. Mormugao United also had a chance to break the deadlock but Elazmo Gama’s feeble shot went straight into the hands of the rival goalkeeper.
Cortalim Villagers nearly found success but Ivon Gama’s try went into the hands of rival goalkeeper. With time running out, Mormugao United Sammen Borkar failed to beat the rival goalkeeper in a one-to-one situation.
In another match, Varca Sports Club rallied from behind to hold Mandopa Sporting Club 1-1 at Government Village School ground, Ambelim on Tuesday.
