Encouraging women to take up the sport, Goa Football Development Council (GFDC) Chairman Brahmanand Shankhwalkar said that substantial progress has been made in women's football across the country and in Goa over the last two decades. He was speaking at the Women's Day celebration organised by Portais Sporting Club in association with GFDC at Carambolim panchayat ground recently. Those present were Chief Guest Sis. Lavita Fatima Fernandes, Headmistress, Jesus and Mary High School, Carambolim along with Shankwalkar who was the guest of honour. As part of the celebrations, two football matches were conducted by the organisers -- a junior women's match and senior women's match. GFDC Mayem won the junior women's football match while Portais Sporting Club defeated Kelbai Sports Club by 2-0 in the senior women's match. In his address, the GFDC chairman said that the Women's U-17 World Cup held in Goa has immensely benefited women's football in terms of exposure, and expressed confidence that more women will come forward to take up the sport.
