Chief Minister of Goa Dr. Pramod Sawant inaugurated the Amravati Football League (AFL) at the Amona Football Ground, highlighting the state’s commitment to youth development and grassroots football. The event received significant support from Vedanta Sesa Goa, Value Added Business (VAB), which partnered with the Amravati Sports Club (ASC) to organise the tournament, providing exclusive sports kits and accessories to all participating teams.
The inauguration was attended by notable dignitaries, including Sankalp Amonkar, MLA from Mormugao Constituency, and Pratik Bhagat, President of the AFL. The league will feature 19 matches over two months, with six teams competing at the panchayat ground, Amona. After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AFL has been revived with Vedanta’s backing, aiming to provide a robust platform for emerging football talent.
Vedanta Sesa Goa has actively contributed to sports development through initiatives like the Sesa Football Academy, which has established football centers for girls in Amona and Bicholim, and fields various age group teams for boys and girls. In 2023, Vedanta successfully organized a 28-team Vedanta Football Championship in Bicholim.
Saptesh Sardesai, CEO of Vedanta VAB, emphasized the importance of sports in shaping youth, stating, “Our partnership with the AFL reflects our commitment to nurturing local talent and promoting health, teamwork, and perseverance.”
Pratik Bhagat expressed gratitude for Vedanta’s continued support, acknowledging its significant impact on local youth. With ongoing backing, the AFL aims to elevate the community’s football talent and promote a spirit of unity and progress in Goa.
