Dempo Sports Club came from behind to emerge victorious with a 3-1 win over Guardian Angel Sports Club in the GFA's Goa Professional League, at SAG Trinity ground, Benaulim, on Thursday.
Both the teams were tied at the lemon break. Dempo Sports Club dominated the game however it was Guardian Angel Sports Club who rocked the rival citadel in the 27th minute when attacking midfielder Gilbert Oliveira slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot. Unfazed, Dempo went into attacking mode as Guardian Angel goalkeeper made a blunder as he fouled a Dempo player and referee showed the dreaded shot. Anish Gadkar send the rival goalkeeper Oswin Rodrigues in the wrong way with the resultant spot kick.
The first half ended with 1-1 draw. In the second half, Dempo asserted dominance early on, maintaining complete control of the game and catching Guardian Angel on counter-attacks. In the 71st minute, Substitute Shreyash Naik bulged the net. Aryan Poll hammered the last nail in the 81st minute.
Elswhere, Marcus Mascarenhas scored the only goal of the game for Flaming Oranje against Cortalim Villagers.
The breakthrough came when Myron Fernandes' strategic throw-in found Mascarenhas, who displayed impeccable timing and skill to redirect the ball into the net at the death of the match. This moment of brilliance not only shattered the deadlock but also underscored Sporting Clube de Goa's relentless pursuit of victory, as they capitalized on their dominance in possession and territorial advantage.
In GFA Third Division League Ilhas Zone, Bhagwati SC secured a 5-2 win over Merces Club to emerge champions of the zone. GFA Executive Member Laximan Hadfadkar was present for the trophy presentation. In Mormugao zone match, Vasco City recorded a 2-0 win over Patrong SC.
In women’s league match, Compassion FC humbled Sinquerim SC 7-0.
In GFA U-15 Division I, Panjim Footballers got the better of Pax of Nagoa 3-1. Dempo’s Arnold Oliveira was named the player of the match.
