MARGAO
After a lengthy hiatus of 11 years, Goa team has finally stepped up and the team confidence is high as they prepare to face Assam in the 76th National Championship for Santosh Trophy in their first Group III match in Kokrajhar, Assam on December 28.
"We have been playing dominating football during the coaching camp and I feel the team will continue its form against West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Arunachal Pradesh," said Jovel Martins, captain of the Goa Santosh Trophy squad. He added that the players were eager to give their best against Bengal. "It is a dream run. The players are working very hard to capitalise on the start that we have got from the matches," Jovel said.
Talking to 'The Goan', Jovel was all praise for his team. He hoped that the team would make the most of their chance this time. "Against teams like Assam and Tamil Nadu, you cannot afford to miss scoring chances. We are playing well and will continue to stick to our game," Jovel added.
Players are also looking to impress club scouts when they take on Assam. "The Santosh Trophy is a big platform for players to get picked by the big clubs. Since many talented players are in action in the Santosh Trophy, it is always good to perform as the smallest contributions could get highlighted," said the defender, who has played for Sporting Clube de Goa and Churchill Brothers in the I-League.
Jovel said the team hopes to perform to the best of its abilities as the tournament progresses. "We will give our best to win the title. We are having good practice sessions. We have come to perform," Jovel said. “We know the responsibility that the Santosh Trophy brings with it. We have the duty of performing for our fans,” said the Goa captain.
Jovel said coach Norbert Gonsalves has done a great job in making the team gel together and make it a cohesive unit. Clencio Pinto will be the vice-captain of the squad.
