Goa Triathlon Association (GTA) will send a team for the National Triathlon Qualifiers to be held in Chennai from September 24-26.
In a media release, Nisha Madgavkar, Ironman triathlete and secretary of the GTA said that this was the first qualification event for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in 2022. The event will be held at the Centre for Sports Science (CSS), Sri Ramachandra University Campus, Porur, Chennai.
Madgavkar said, “Athletes with the best timing in the sprint distance, Olympic distance and mixed relay (team) events will be invited for the national camps and provisionally considered for selection to the Indian contingent for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzou, China, subject to performances and Government of India approval.”
According to Madgavkar, the following events would be held at the National Qualifiers: Triathlon standard distance for men and women (18 years and above), Triathlon mixed team relay (16 years and above), Triathlon super sprint distance (men and women, 14-15 age group), Triathlon sprint distance (men and women, 16-17 age group), Triathlon standard distance for men and women (40 years and above) and Para Triathlon for men and women (18 years and above). Triathletes would need to swim in a man-made lake and cycle and run inside the college campus on a flat tarred road.
