Goan Hockey has launched an ambitious Grassroots Development program aimed at unearthing young talent across six talukas. This initiative emphasizes nurturing talent at the grassroots level by identifying and honing gifted players in key positions, thereby strengthening the talent pipeline for India’s hockey teams.
Key Features of the Program:
Formation of a Talent Pool: Goan Hockey will create a dedicated team of experienced coaches who will conduct intensive training sessions in schools throughout the state. The program is set to begin in six talukas after Diwali.
Exposure to Competitive Conditions: Abhay Bhamaikar, President of Goan Hockey, stated that the grassroots program will provide young athletes with the opportunity to experience match conditions similar to those at the Hockey India National Championships, further enhancing their skills.
Selection Committees: Each taluka will establish selection committees responsible for identifying talented athletes and monitoring their development.
Focus on Specialized Positions: Bhamaikar emphasized the importance of developing players in specialized roles, stating, “We want to grow players holistically.” The Grassroots Development Committee will identify training locations and ensure adequate facilities for specialized coaching camps, supported by Hockey India.
Tracking Player Development: The program aims to monitor players aged U15 to U18, allowing Goan Hockey to assess their skills and focus on their progression. Bhamaikar highlighted the significance of junior and sub-junior teams, noting that not every player will make it to the national level, but they can take pride in representing their state.
Integration into the Ecosystem: Shortlisted players from both age groups will be integrated into a broader framework to serve as feeders for the Goan team.
Overall, this grassroots initiative marks a significant advancement for hockey in Goa, focusing on talent identification, specialized training, and the development of junior teams. With a strong emphasis on nurturing aspiring players, the program aims to generate greater interest in the sport and elevate the standard of hockey in the region.
