India assistant coach Mahesh Gawli expressed his happiness after his side's 4-2 penalty shootout win over Lebanon in the semifinals of the SAFF Championship on Saturday.

Speaking to 'The Goan', Gawli said: “I am happy with the win and the result, we controlled the match completely and we were better than Lebanon."

India will play Kuwait in the final at the Sree Kanteerva Stadium in Bengaluru. "It is Inda's ninth consecutive final and we are keen to defend the crown on Tuesday," Gawli said. "It will be a tough match but our morale is high and we are ready. We are looking forward to giving a winning performance and ending the season with a triumph."

"We are going through a good phase and I am hopeful the team will give its best.”

"We had preparation for the final. It’s an important match for us and we have a great responsibility as our goal is to win the SAFF Cup,” he said. "I am hopeful that the game will live up to the occasion, with the home crowd,” he said. "We have a good opportunity to secure the prestigious title but we face a formidable challenge in the final. Our players are well-equipped to handle the pressure of such a crucial match, and we will approach the game with a positive mindset.”

"Indian fans have high expectations, and it is our unwavering aim to win the championship. Our focus remains steadfast on the match, and we eagerly anticipate fans' presence and unwavering support for the team,” he added.

He also lavishly praised captain Sunil Chettri for his marvellous performance. "He played like a young striker and young players must emulate his example." Gawli signed off.
