In a nail-biting encounter, Varca Veterans edged out Napoli Veterans Batora 1-0 to claim victory in the 4th All Goa Veterans Football Tournament at the DSYA ground in Curtorim on Sunday.
Both sides came out strong in the match of the tournament organised by United Club of Batora, with Varca's Charles nearly finding the net in the 10th minute. Napoli Batora threatened before half-time, but Santan Furtado's attempt at an open net missed by a whisker.
The second half held the game's defining moment. In the 40th minute, Varca's Francisco Fernandes, affectionately known as Pele, unleashed a well-placed shot, breaking the deadlock. Napoli Batora fought back, Eidth Fernandes and Abel Noronha leading the charge, but Varca's defence held firm.
As the final whistle blew, Varca celebrated their hard-fought victory, their triumph secured by Pele's strike. The coveted Man of the Match award went to the goalscorer himself, presented by Caitano Fernandes, member of the Batora United Club.
