St Rock Youth Club of Calata Majorda edged past Curtorim Gymkhana 2-1 to emerge champions in the Cavelossim Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, sponsored by Cavelossim Village Panchayat and organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim at Fr Drunston & Wellington football ground, Cavelossim on Monday.
Lenny Vaz gave the lead to St Rock YSC in the 12th minute while Beevan D’Mello doubled the lead in the 48th minute. In the second half, Joy Hilario reduced the margin for Curtorim Gymkhana.
St Rock Youth Club were richer by Rs 60,000 plus trophy while Curtorim Gymkhana had to be content with a purse of Rs 40,000 plus trophy. Dr Caitan Fernandes, GFA President, distributed the prizes in the presence of Dixon Vaz, Sarpanch of Cavelossim, and Alex Reginald Lourenco, MLA of Curtorim, Fr Ubaldo Fernandes, parish priest and other dignitaries and club officials.
Individual prizes: best goalkeeper - Shenoy Costa (St Rock Youth), best promising player - Jordon (Arlem YA), First goal of the final - Lenny Vaz (St Rock Youth), Best midfielder - Nixon Castanha (Curtorim), Best defender - Myson Fernandes (Curtorim), Man of the Match - Beevan D'Mello (Majorda).
Earlier, Viano Rodrigues, president of the club, welcomed the guests and the football lovers. The final coincided with the birthday of Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz and a birthday cake was cut during the interval. Sarpanch promised to work to aid the sport by providing the necessary infrastructure for the youth. Dr Fernandes promised a green ground after the rains this year. Secretary Viriato Mendes proposed a vote of thanks while Francis Rodrigues compered the programme. Even though the final was held on Monday, a record crowd attended the game.
