Verna Sports Club entered the semi-finals of the 17th Guirdolim Panchayat Cup after defeating Navelim Villagers Union 4-1, at Chandor Church Sports Complex, on Saturday.
Verna SC started on a attacking note right from the word go and did not allow the Navelim lads to settle. Andrus John could have put Verna in the lead as early as the seventh minute but a timely tackle by Malappa of Navelim denied him.
Navelim could manage only one shot on goal in the 20th minute through Clinton but the Verna keeper displayed brilliant reflexes to palm the ball out of play. Both teams went to the break goalless.
Changing over, Verna continued their domination but as in the first half the defence of Navelim led by Malappa kept the Verna strikers at bay. Navelim hardly created any chances during the second period. The match thus ended goalless at regulation time.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Verna scored through Andrus, Imamsab, Josle and Cyrus while for Navelim only Frenden was on target.
Imamsab of Verna Sports Club was awarded the Man of the match award.
