Dr Shekatkar said that the western coastline, from Vengurla in Maharashtra and Karwar in Karnataka can be developed as an international port, with Goa playing a strategic role. "The development of the sea coast from Vengurla to Karwar will improve the country's trade and will give a boost to the Exclusive Economic Zone", he said.
Addressing the media, Sagar Discourse 17 convenor and former Coast Guard Commander, Dr Prabharkaran Paleiri said that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's prestigious Sagar Malla project has found favour with a representative of Sri Lanka attending the two day discourse, which is being attended by representatives of 22 countries. "The India government's Sagar Malla project will revolutionize shipping and related infrastructure. It is project mooted for the country, but it can be very well extended to neighbourign countries in South Asia, including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to ensure security and growth in the region", he added.
Paleri also said climatic changes posed a great danger to human habitation in many countries, including the island states.
