The Waman Naik episode began after Calangute police rescuedone girl in October 2012 and another girl in November 2012. The Sub DivisionalMagistrate (SDM) conducted an inquiry in the case within three weeks. Duringthe course of recording statements, two of the girls went on record andprovided valuable information as to the involvement of cops in the prostitutionbusiness
She came here to work as a domestic helper, but she said shewas harassed by the owner. The statement details that she left that job and wassitting in the garden where she came in contact with one pimp called AnwarShah, who provided her accommodation and they started living together. Sheclaimed that Shah was the person who was supplying her to the police inCalangute, Mapusa and Bicholim. She identified only one person, a headconstable then attached to Calangute police, Waman Naik. She has also statedWaman was taking protection money from her to work in Calangute. She is HIV positive.

She was exploited by these police officers and was evenpaying protection money to run a business in Calangute. She has also claimedthat she was an eyewitness when
Waman was having sex with transgenders. Sources in theCalangute informed that there were more than 10 transgenders and more than 15prostitutes in the area.
Sources have also claimed that Waman used to collect Rs 3000from transgenders and prostitutes every week.

Any thorough investigation will revealwhy the same tainted cops have been around for seven years and their tenure wasmarked with a parallel increase in the sex trade in Calangute. The fact thatthey managed to come back after their last transfer points out that they havethe blessings of seniors.
If that is the case, why are the accused cops not beingarrested?
That is my question. Why are the police not being able to arrest themas yet, despite the case being so strong? Waman Naik and company have to bearrested and grilled to get out the names of the people who shielded them andthe other accused.
