Margao-based Apollo Victor Hospital recently performed a complex surgery using specialised screws with holes for introducing bone cement into the vertebrae of a 67-year old suffering from chronic osteoporosis.
The prevailing complication resulted in a fracture of her spine vertebrae.
She had been operated previously and normal pedicle screws were used. However due to severe osteoporosis the screw had failed and she has another fracture. She was bed ridden for 6 months with no hope of recovery from severe pain. With no hope she was then referred to the Neurospinal Team of Apollo Victor Hospital, according to a press release issued.
A fenestrated screw with bone cement is the latest technology available which can provide hope for the patients with severe osteoporosis and spine fracture. The lady was able to walk the day after surgery with complete relief of pain, the release added.
