Stung by the mass defection of eight of its eleven legislators last year, one would have thought the Congress in Goa would embark on a rebuild and revamp mission. It did soon after the desertions but that initial enthusiasm vanished quickly. On the contrary, the few leaders in the depleted principal Opposition party are engaged in a bitter internal battle for control.
The latest signs of the internal strife in the Congress here in Goa is the recent disciplinary notice served to the party’s executive member and its Porvorim candidate Vikas Prabhudesai, who has been accused of tarnishing the party’s State president Amit Patkar.
Congress insiders have admitted to the internal turmoil and the tussle between Patkar’s team and loyalists of his predecessor, Girish Chodankar.
Apparently the feud is for a greater say over party matters and most importantly the process of selection of candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats in 2024, where the office of the GPCC president has a major say.
