Speaker v/s Oppn

Speaker v/s Oppn

The spat between Goa legislative assembly Speaker, Ramesh Tawadkar, and the ostensibly 'united' Opposition of the strength of seven, has sullied the pitch a tad, ahead of the four-day winter session of the House which is slated to begin on January 16.

The Opposition, which at the initiative of the Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has perceptibly closed ranks, rightly raised their grievances over one, restricting the session to just four days and two eliminating the private member's business entirely.

The takeaway from this Speaker versus the Opposition confrontation, however, is the unity forged by the seven legislators, despite the inherent political fissures among them.

This rare Opposition unity faces a threat though -- personality clashes among the seven. The ongoing Speaker v/s Opposition spat, for instance, has fallen prey in a way to the penchant of Vijai Sardesai, the senior most among them, to dominate the narrative, making it look more like a 'Tawadkar v/s Vijai' logjam rather than a 'Speaker v/s Opposition' one.
