The problem is not only at schools. It is all about childrenat schools, after school, on the buses, on the streets and play grounds andeven at home. Why make a big issue about schools? What we need is a goodneighbourhood watch network.

I had gone to St. Andrews ICSE school at Vasco. What I sawwas really shocking - toilets for boys and girls down on the ground floor andno security. The principal and administration office on the first floor gets abalcony view just like in the movie theatres. Is the management waiting for arepeat show?

Most schools will not be able to fund this. It will have todone by the PTA since schools by themselves cannot charge any fees. Somebuildings suffer from design shortcomings and nothing can be done. St. Joseph'sopens right onto the road. Kids are out on the road during breaks. It's eitherthat or stay in class. Controlling visitors to St Andrew's will also be adifficult task. Church office, priests residence, Church hall, cemetery, how doyou know who is going where? I studied at St Joseph's. What will you do withthe kids during interval?

Deepak J Singh

One way to go about this is to have standards nine and tenon the ground floor. There should be a secure coded door at the entrance and asecurity guard to be placed on the ground floor. During the interval, staffmembers are present on the corridors to supervise the kids in their care and nokid is allowed to go outside the school gates.
