Theconstruction of the Talaba dam in Sindhudurgdistrict is now placing on a huge burden on the government exchequer.
Whenthe Talaba dam project was passed by the Maharashtra government in 1981, theestimated cost was estimated at Rs 72.37crore. Today in 2012 the cost has been revised to awhopping Rs 700 crores.
Thegovernment has already spent rupees Rs 114 crores to complete 14% of the workon the dam and is expected to be completed in 2015revealed a PWD official. A delay, he says leads to an increasein the cost of the project. This increase reflectsthe thirty year old delay.
Rehabilitation:
Sevenvillages were affected due to the construction of the dam in the district. Accordingto the locals, authorities have grosslyviolated the rehabilitation policy of the government. Even after more than 30years the villages are yet to be rehabilitated.
Asper a survey carried out in 1981 there were 1,136 families in all the seven villages,which were affected by the project. Now a recent survey says that the figurehas surpassed the previous figure of 3000 families.
Theproject will benefit neighboring villages, where more than 17,000 acres ofagricultural land will get water supply. Locals have said that the project willbe beneficial to the farmers of the Sindhudurg district. “Delay in completionof the work has kept one generation away fromthe benefits of the project,” a farmer from Vasoli village said.
