A trek to Hivrem, Valpoi was organised for the SSC students of Our Lady of Rosary High School, Mandrem as a scout and guide activity. The theme for the trek was “Save trees save life”. The programme began with a short assembly and distribution of seed bombs made by the students of Class IX and distributed amongst the SSC students. All the students were full of zeal, determination and prepared to learn and enjoy the trek with their proper kits as instructed by their scout master Tr Ansgar Fernandes and Guide captain Tr Deepti Morajkar. The reporting time was 7:30am. We set out from school at around 8:30am and reached the spot at 11am.The guide briefed us about some important points to remember like walk carefully with presence of mind, don’t litter, don’t hurt any animal if seen, etc. He also informed us that it comes under the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary. As we were trekking we threw the seed bombs on barren land so as to grow plants. We were also fed with some important information about the State tree of Goa named the “crocodile bark tree”. Medicinal importance of some of the wild plants was provided to the participants. The girl guides managed to climb to the first waterfall while the scout boys carried on further to experience the other two waterfalls. The girl guides laid woodcraft signs as they travelled up wards to guide them on their return journey. We learnt how to appreciate nature and its gifts, balance, team work, courage, support. Overall it was an amazing and well experienced trek.
